Using Ripe Avocados

Generally, avocados are sold before they are ripe, so just make sure you keep that in mind and have enough time between purchase and plating. Nothing is more disappointing than a waxy, flavorless mix-in when you’re expecting a creamy, buttery addition.

While some people make it seem easy, not everyone can do the palm test to test the firmness of produce (for the record, it should be slightly springy). The stem is one way to check if an avocado is good to go. When it’s difficult to remove, it’s not ready. To expedite the ripening process, leave avocados in a brown paper bag with a banana or apple for 2 to 3 days.

Now that your avocados are ripe, you can’t let them go to waste! Avocados will hit the spot, no matter when the craving strikes. Why not start your day right with a picture-perfect Pesto Egg Rice? Or, if you prefer, you could wind down with a protein-packed Power Rice Stuffed Sweet Potato! For another classic dish why not try this Microwave Egg Fried Rice or Red Beans and Rice.
