Explore a Flavorful Filipino Classic Rice Dish

Sinangag, or Filipino Garlic Fried Rice, is more than just a side dish—it’s an essential part of Filipino cuisine. Whether enjoyed for breakfast, as a side to a hearty meal or even as a simple snack, Sinangag is both comforting and flavorful, with its golden-brown crispy edges and fragrant garlic aroma. This recipe for Sinangag brings together the simplicity of everyday ingredients to create a dish that’s so much more than the sum of its parts.

If you’ve ever had Sinangag at a Filipino breakfast spread, you know it’s often paired with delicious silog meals, such as tocilog (fried rice with tocino) or longsilog (fried rice with longganisa). But this flavorful garlic fried rice doesn’t need to be relegated to just a breakfast dish—serve it with grilled meats, stir fries or as a quick lunch or dinner for any time of day.

The Heart of Sinangag: Garlic and Rice

At the core of Sinangag are a few key ingredients: rice, garlic, oil and salt. You might wonder how something so simple can be so flavorful. The secret lies in the technique and balance of ingredients. The garlic is sautéed until golden brown, releasing its nutty fragrance that infuses the oil and rice with warmth and depth. The rice itself is fried until it gets slightly crispy, creating that irresistible texture that pairs perfectly with the rich garlic. And let’s not forget the salt, which brings all the flavors together in a savory harmony.

While the dish is incredibly simple, there are a few ways to elevate it to make it uniquely your own. Adding a fried egg on top is a classic way to bring extra richness to the dish. The yolk adds a creamy element that perfectly complements the crispy rice and garlic, making each bite more indulgent. If you’re looking to take it a step further, you can also experiment with different seasonings and ingredients like pepper, soy sauce or even a dash of vinegar to balance out the garlic’s richness.

A Versatile, Customizable Dish

Sinangag’s simplicity makes it an incredibly versatile dish. While it’s often enjoyed as a side, there’s no reason you can’t turn it into a meal of its own. The dish can easily be customized with your favorite ingredients to suit your taste or dietary preferences. If you like a bit of protein in your fried rice, try adding leftover chicken, pork or shrimp to make it more filling. You can even mix in some vegetables like peas, carrots or bell peppers. For those who enjoy a spicier kick, a few dashes of chili flakes or some finely chopped fresh chili can add heat to the dish, giving it that extra zing.

One of the best things about Sinangag is how adaptable it is to different flavor profiles. While garlic is always the star, you can also experiment with adding other aromatics, like onions, ginger or shallots, to introduce even more layers of flavor. If you’re a fan of the tangy, savory taste of soy sauce, feel free to add a splash to the rice as it fries, taking the flavor to a whole new level.

Sinangag for Any Occasion

Whether you’re making it for a weekday breakfast, a special Filipino feast, or a quick weeknight dinner, Sinangag fits perfectly into any meal plan. Serve it alongside traditional Filipino dishes, such as adobo, lechon kawali or grilled meats, for a complete Filipino meal. Or, enjoy it on its own with a fried egg and a drizzle of soy sauce for a satisfying breakfast or lunch.

A Dish that Brings People Together

To store your Sinangag, simply place it in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. You can reheat it in the microwave, on the stovetop or even in a wok for that signature crispy texture. If you’d like to refresh the flavors, a small drizzle of oil or a splash of soy sauce will bring back the deliciously savory taste.
